For thousands of years, people have depended on this tropical tree for wood, fibre and fruit. The earliest Arabian spice traders caught the Monsoon breezes to India in dhows made from coconut wood bound together with coconut rope.
As far back as 2,000 years ago, the traders were carrying coconuts from India to East Africa; and the name ‘zhawzhat al-hind’ (meaning ‘walnut of India’) survives in Arabic dialects today.
